As Christians we are to judge all things with a spirit of discernment. 2 Corinthians 2:15.
Discernment will help us to distinguish what is good and pleasing to God and to find true contentment. (Sorry for the Piper coming out in me.)
This Wednesday, Grovers had the opportunity to sit before a law panel and ask questions. They gave some tips on how to be successful in the first year of law school. One lady lawyer mentioned that we should help those around us who have academic trouble because we never know if we will need their help when we get out of law school. While that might be true, I think she missed the Christian’s primary motive. We should help others simply because we are to love each other. She may have thought that was a given, but she came across to me as saying; “Help others because it will benefit yourself.” –> Which of course sounds kind of selfish. So, if I were her, I would give two reasons for helping others. Either she missed the primary motive, or she should have spoken the obvious to avoid confusion.
